Shoulder Pain

Shoulder problems are some of the most painful and limiting conditions. You don’t realize how often you use your shoulders to perform simple daily tasks until they don’t work properly. Sometimes patients can pinpoint an event that caused their injury, but often they cannot. Repetitive motions over time can cause pain and restrict motion. Because of the tenderness of that area, shoulder problems can be extremely painful.

At Chiropractor Plus in Nixa, Dr. Greenwood has helped thousands of patients overcome shoulder pain and problems so that they can regain their range of motion and be pain-free!

There are several different but effective ways of treating shoulder pain. Your care plan will be determined by the exact nature of your condition and your personal desires.

MANIPULATION / ADJUSTMENT

Some shoulder problems originate in the cervical and upper thoracic spine because the neck and upper back innervate all the muscles of the shoulder, arm and hands. Manipulating, or adjusting the cervical and thoracic vertebrae can often be a great help in resolving such issues. Sometimes manipulation of the shoulder and the corresponding arm is necessary to bring about the needed changes.

Dr. Greenwood may also employ range of motion or trigger point therapy to the neck, shoulder, and/or arm to help relieve pain and restore motion.

ACUPUNCTURE

Acupuncture can often be effective in relieving shoulder pain, especially if there are no restrictions in the range of motion. Dr. Greenwood will insert acupuncture needles into specific points in the neck, shoulder, and arm area. He may also apply electrical stimulation to the area to increase the effectiveness of the treatment. You would lie on a comfortable, padded table to relax while receiving treatment, lasting about 15-20 minutes.

The number of treatments necessary to resolve shoulder conditions depends on the nature and severity of the problem. Some conditions may resolve in only a couple of visits; others may necessitate months of care. Dr. Greenwood considers the uniqueness of each individual and your care will be tailored to your specific needs and health goals.

INTERFERENTIAL ELECTRICAL STIMULATION

Interferential Electrical Stimulation may be utilized with or without manipulation or acupuncture to help reduce inflammation and pain for shoulder injuries.

Dr. Greenwood will apply sticky pads to specific areas of your shoulder, back, or arm. These pads are connected to the therapy unit by wires. He will then adjust the type of current. The intensity will be adjusted according to his suggestions and your preference. This treatment lasts about 15 minutes.

Interferential electric stimulation is different from a TENS unit. A TENS unit only blocks pain while is on the area, whereas, interferential stimulation reduces the inflammation on the nerve root as well as relaxing the muscles, eliminating spasms, and changing your condition for the better. The effect is longer-term and continues after the pads have been removed.
